In this his scholarly masterpiece, Ronald Knox traces the history and development of the phenomenon in church history he calls “enthusiasm,” or the various movements of Christian men and women who have attempted to lead a less worldly life than their fellow believers, claiming the direct guidance of the Holy Spirit, and eventually splitting off into separate sects. Taking examples from the whole history of Christianity, but focusing on the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Knox offers a penetrating analysis of groups like the Montanists, Donatists, Anabaptists, Quakers, Jansenists, Quietists, and Methodists.
